30 Rock: 5 x 09 “Chain Reaction of Mental Anguish”

So tonight’s 30 Rock was pretty decent considering that the show has definitely gone downhill since seasons 1, 2, and 3.

 • I think that the writers deal well with Jenna’s relationship with a crossdresser, Paul. The ultimate goal of the show is to be obviously, funny, so they have to poke some fun at Paul, but mostly the joke is on Jenna. Their relationship was created as an extension of Jenna’s narcissism, not to make fun of crossdressers, etc. Also, Jenna’s friends have been accepting of her relationship, so it is presenting positively. It’s great how the 30 Rock writers are playing with gender roles.
 • The second story line of the episode of what Liz’s relationship problems. She started using Kenneth as a therapist, and triggered upsetting memories he had (about eating a pig who was a father figure to him…it was pretty hilarious…) and then Kenneth talked to Jack and triggered his “Daddy issues.” Yes, the nature of Jack and Liz’s relationship is unequal— he is her superior, she depends on him. In this episode, each character’s childhood trauma equalized them. Although initially it seemed that Liz had the classically female problem of not trusting her boyfriend, it was quickly revealed that her problems were due to childhood trauma. And Jack and Kenneth were equally emotional about their problems as Liz was.
 • So good job 30 Rock!

twoxheartedxdream asked: I just want to say that I am so excited about this because while I love tv there is so much misogyny on the shows/in fandom that I wanna bash my head in sometimes. <3

Thanks for the support!

I LOVE RACHEL IN THIS EPISODE.

What a goddess!

Oh dear…

Could Santana possibly be any more evil this episode?

SANTANA WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?

I mean, I know why, but—!

Glee, Episode 2x08 “Furt”

OK, so here’s a quickie recap of last week’s glee. This episode was the first this season directed by a woman, Carol Banker.

 • First of all, Sue Sylvester was fucking amazing in this episode. Good on her for standing up to bullies, be they teenaged boys or her own mother. My only problem was that she was spurred into action by Rod, the smarmy dude from WOHN News, getting engaged to Andrea, his equally smarmy co-anchor.
 • Rachel Berry! I’m glad you are standing up for Kurt. But why does that mean sitting back and letting the men take care of things? And calling a top seekrit meeting of football player’s girlfriends—a.k.a. all the girls in Glee Club but Santana and Mercedes. Charming, Rachel.
 • When did Quinn Fabray become such a card-carrying feminist? We saw her give a little rant about male objectification of women in “The Rocky Horror Glee Show,” and in this week’s episode she actually calls Rachel out on her shit. Thank you, Quinn, for being the voice of reason!
 • Except that Quinn, like EVERY OTHER CHARACTER on this show, is so inconsistent that she’ll probably never mention feminism ever again. Just a few episodes ago, after all, she was manipulating her way to the top of the cheer pyramid by telling Sue alllll about Santana’s “summer surgery.”
 • Speaking of Santana, there has been a lot of concern around the interwebs about her characterization this episode. Santana’s longing look at the wedding seemed pretty clearly an expression of her general relationship angst, not a sign that she wants to marry Finn Hudson. Similarly, she seemed like she was hitting on him because she was feeling hurt and lonely. She hasn’t forgotten about Brittany—just the opposite!
 • The whole girls taking care of their hurt boyfriends thing after the Karofsky locker room showdown was a little ridiculous.

Overall, the ep was less offensive than usual. Yaaaay! Here’s to hoping tonight’s episode is even better!

In the meanwhile, here’s a gif from Buffy to enjoy!

Quinn Fabray should write for this blog.

I think you personally just set the feminist movement back 50 years.
